What to see
at Go Short

Program lines

During the festival, we present around 100 film blocks. These are divided into several program lines, which we briefly introduce below.

1. Competitions

Curious about the best short films of the moment? Then you've come to the right place with our competitions. Every year, we receive thousands of submissions and select the films you simply must see: surprising, daring, moving, or simply incredibly good. These are:

  • the European competition: the best European short (co-)productions
  • short films from the Netherlands
  • the New Arrivals Competition: the best short films from European film and art academies
  • the Dutch Competition: the best
  • the Music Video Competition: the best music videos

2. Reflections

With Reflections, we reflect on what's happening around us. We use short films to present current topics from different perspectives. Because a film program always consists of multiple films, you don't get a single story, but a collection of perspectives on the same theme. This allows us to show complexity without simplifying it. Reflections offers depth while remaining accessible: you don't need any prior knowledge to watch and reflect.

3. Refresh

Fancy something a little different? Then Refresh is the place for you. In this program, we give space to creators who push the boundaries of film and experiment with new forms. Expect work that plays with technique, form, and narrative, and will thoroughly revolutionize your view of what "film" can be.

You'll see unconventional filmmakers, experiments with games, AI, and desktop cinema, and fresh micro-genres you might not have heard of. We're also exploring adventures outside the cinema with VR, XR, and interactive installations. Refresh is playful, surprising, and sometimes a little strange, just like short film can be.

4. Best of the Fests

In this program, we present the highlights of the past year in an accessible way. Examples include programs such as Oscar Shorts, featuring the Academy Award nominees from the previous year; International Highlights, showcasing the most successful films from other festivals; and Comedy Shorts. This strand also includes Short Surprise: a continuous program at a fixed location, where a single short film is screened every half hour. On the final day of the festival, we present the Jury Winners and Audience Favourites of the festival.

5. Late night

Late Night is for anyone who wants to stay a little longer in the evening for something a little more exciting, playful, or just a little more quirky. This program focuses on genre films and the overall experience of the evening. Expect programs like horror, queer erotica, and provocative animation. These are the screenings you'll go to with your friends and talk about for ages.

6. Talent

New creators deserve a platform. Within the Talent program, you'll discover fresh ideas, personal stories, and films that showcase what's growing and bubbling beyond the beaten track.

With programs like Homegrown, we spotlight local and regional talent. We also offer opportunities to creators from underrepresented regions, film students, and young curators. Young people collaborate with our team on their own programs and present them to the public. This way, we're building the next generation of filmmakers and programmers together.

7. Family

Go Short is also there for young film fans. With our Family programs, we invite children to discover the magic of short films with their parents, grandparents, caregivers, or other favorite movie buddies. We create film blocks for different age groups, so everyone can watch and enjoy at their own pace.

For the littlest ones, there's a special 2+ program with short, sweet films in a relaxed setting. The lights stay on, the sound is turned down, and there's plenty of room to wiggle, laugh, or just look around. This makes their first movie visit fun, safe, and enjoyable.
